The 2012 Hyundai Elantra sedan has just earned itself a sobriquet, and one which Hyundai will proudly tom-tom around for the next year or so and deservedly so. At this year’s Detroit Motor Show, the Hyundai Elantra won wide acclaim from a jury of eminent motoring journalists and industry stalwarts to be crowned as the American car of the year 2012. The Hyundai Elantra Fluidic has sold a whopping 186,361 units in America ever since its launch in 2011. The Elantra winning the 2012 American Car of the Year award only underscores the huge strides in every aspect of the car industry that Hyundai has made so far.
From being an also ran where Hyundai’s cars were poked fun at, in the past, the South Korean brand has become a behemoth in America,  now commanding respect from buyers and manufacturers alike. While awards really are academic in nature, we’ll now move on to how the Elantra Fluidic will be a relevant car for the Indian market. Hyundai India will introduce the Elantra Fluidic in the latter half of 2012, positioning the car in the Indian D-segment car market, amongst the Corollas, Cruzes and Civics of this world.

The Elantra is a known brand in India, with Hyundai selling a previous generation version a few years ago, although it never really managed to capture the imagination of the Indian D-segment car buyer despite it being a good package overall. Hyundai will be hoping that the Elantra Fluidic, will change it all, with the brand’s fluidic design philosophy to the vastly improved interior design. Engine options will include both a petrol and a diesel engine. The petrol engine is expected to be a 1.6 Liter Gas Direct Injection(GDI) mill while the diesel will be a uptuned version of the 1.6 Liter gamma diesel engine on the Verna Fluidic.
The petrol engine will also feature Hyundai’s VTVT variable valve technology and produce about 140 Bhp while the diesel engine will also produce a similar power output. The torque though is expected to be in the range of 280-300 Nm on the diesel engine and that will be the biggest talker. Needless to say, the diesel engined variant will bring in the major chunk of sales for Hyundai. A six speed manual and a six speed automatic gearbox are expected to be offered on both versions of the Elantra in India. The launch is scheduled to happen sometime in the second half of 2012 even as testing of the Elantra on Indian roads is underway.
